'DEI bureaucracy' harming US military academies, study says

A “vast DEI bureaucracy” in the nation’s military academies is leading to negative impacts on U.S. Armed Forces, according to a new Arizona State University report.

The 80-page report released by the school’s Center for American Institutions condemned treatment of the prestigious schools as a “laboratory for social experimentation.” Exposure to critical race theory during schooling is leading future military leaders to contribute to a growing culture surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion, the report states.

The National Commission on Civic Education in the Military finds that cadets and midshipmen at our military service academies are receiving extensive training in so-called civic education about racism, sexism, unconscious bias, and intersectionality that subverts our ideals,” the report reads. “These trainings rely heavily on the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and are provided with the express goals of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace, and of rooting out alleged white supremacy in the military. Training is implemented by a vast DEI bureaucracy that extends from senior leaders at the Pentagon to the lowest ranks.”

DEI themes, the report says, “dominate” the “Orwellian” trainings given to servicemembers. To combat this, researchers called for class syllabi to be made public and for the military to implement more education related to American values and the U.S. Constitution.

“Americans are rapidly losing confidence in our fundamental social and political institutions, including the military,” researchers wrote. “Critical to restoring trust is a restoration of civic education focused on foundational principles upon which America’s founders created the experiment of our democratic republic.”

Members of Congress are now probing the extent to which taxpayer dollars are used to promote DEI initiatives at the Pentagon. In a letter to Defense Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, several lawmakers condemned the “DoD’s emphasis on diversity and inclusion over mission effectiveness and capability concerns our nation’s national security and safety.”
