Idaho debate sparks viral video poking fun at the Gem State
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Idaho is making national headlines for one of its political debates. But the Gem State isn't catching attention for the serious issues. It's a couple of dozen clips of statements made by Republican gubernatorial candidates Harley Brown and Walt Bayes that's catching all of the attention.
Various articles and a viral YouTube video that takes clips from the GOP gubernatorial debate have the internet buzzing about Idaho. It featured Governor Butch Otter, Russ Fulcher, Harley Brown and Walt Bayes.
Serious issues were covered, but comments from Brown and Bayes are drawing all of the attention.
"We are cop magnets," Brown said, referring to the biker community. "Like a playboy bunny in a mini skirt gets hit on all the time."
"I honestly think half of the Republican Party is Democrats and half of the Democratic Party is communist," Bayes said.
"I'm about as politically correct as your proverbial turd in a fish bowl," Brown added.
Whether it's good or bad , Idahoans KBOI spoke with are taking all of the attention the state is getting pretty well.
"I'm not offended by it," said Benjamin Gin, a Boise resident.
"We should be able to make fun of ourselves and not take things too seriously," said Michelle Sligar, who also lives in Boise.
And Randy Oseen, from Boise as well, said, "I don't think they're laughing at us, they're laughing with us."
Aside from just having a good laugh, these Idahoans say the video might encourage people to find out what's going on in the governor's race.
"Now I'll probably actually watch the debate," said Gin.
And anyone who does decide to take a closer look at the candidates can take this piece of advice from Brown:
"You have your choice, folks. A cowboy, a curmudgeon, a biker or a normal guy. Take your pick. Thank you very much. We're leaving it up to you."
