Master Armorers, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Quest

Publish date: 2024-07-04

1. Find a master armorer in Velen.

When you ask Fergus if he can make a master armor for you, his assistant, Yoana, will tell you that to do this it is necessary to have the right tools that can be found on Undvik Island.

Find a master armorer in Velen.

Witchers live to kill monsters, and so they place great importance on the weapons and armor they use. Bodily harm is all too common in this profession, so whenever the chance arises to acquire better work clothing, the thinking witcher pounces on it like a cat on a plump mouse.

Such a mouse skittered in front of Geralt's eyes at one point in the form of the dwarf Fergus, an armorer of great renown. The craftsman promised to forge top-notch equipment for our hero, but first he needed the appropriate tools. Geralt thus set out in search of them.

2. Get blacksmith's tools from Undvik. / Defeat the troll.

You will visit the island of Undvik while doing "The Lord of Undvik" quest, so it is best to search for tools while doing this quest. The forge where you will find the tools is located in a cave next to the Clan Tordarroch Forge signpost. Once inside, you will encounter an ice troll (26), which you will have to kill.

The high-quality smithing tools can be found in the chest standing near the fireplace.

3. Bring the tools to Fergus. / Decide if you trust Yoana.

Return to Fergus with the tools. When you hand over the tools, a Nilfgaardian general will arrive to the forge, and will ask Fergus to make armor for him. When Fergus will be busy talking to the general, Yoana will tell you that she's actually the master armorer, not Fergus. If you believe what she told you, she'll ask you to bring her the archgriffin acid gland she needs to make the armor.

Bring the tools to Fergus. / Decide if you trust Yoana.

A place will be marked on the map where you can start searching for the archgriffin, and on the Crow's Perch Notice Board you will find a contract to start the "Contract: The Griffin from the Highlands" quest.

4. Get gland acid from an archgriffin.

Go to the place marked on the map and there you will find the remains of griffin victims...

...or its feathers.

His nest and the Archgriffin (26) itself can be found on a nearby hill. Kill him and take the Archgriffin acid gland. In the corpse you will also find the trophy you need to complete the "Contract: The Griffin from the Highlands" quest.

5. Take the gland acid to Yoana. / Talk to Fergus. / Help test the armor.

Go back to Yoana and give her the acid. Then she'll finish the armor for the general. When the general arrives to collect his armor, then Yoanna will show him the armor she made. The General won't want to believe that her armor is better than the one made by Fergus and will demand a test. Yoana will ask for your help and you have to agree, otherwise the quest will end in failure.

You wear the armor made by Yoana, and some villager will wear the armor made by Fergus. The General will shoot from the crossbow at both of you, and of course only you will get out of this test unscathed.

Take the gland acid to Yoana. / Talk to Fergus. / Help test the armor.

With this test, the General will see that Yoana has the right skills and will order Fergus to hand over the forge to her. Yoana will thank you for your trust and tell you to come back next day to collect your armor. You will receive the Mag Deira cuirass diagram, and from now on, she'll be able to forge the master quality armor pieces for you.

Geralt acquired the tools, but his adventure did not end there. In the meantime he learned Fergus' apprentice was the true master of the forge, and Fergus himself a mere figurehead. Apparently this arrangement came about because they thought no one would believe a woman could possess such talent. It seemed now the fickle apprentice had changed her mind and wished to assume her rightful place in the sun.

In order to prove her talent, she made Geralt do a bit of running around and act as an archer's target in a bizarre ordeal. Luckily, everything worked out and in the end our hero earned the gratitude of a true master armoress, who promised to forge him the best plate in the world.

If you refuse to participate in the test, the quest will end in failure.

Geralt acquired the tools, but in the end no armor would be forged with them. It turned out the real talent in the workshop belonged to Fergus' female understudy, the man himself being a mere figurehead there to assuage people who would never believe a woman could possess such talent. Geralt was asked to assist in proving this talent to all and sundry by acting as a human target of sorts - and this was too much for him. He refused to participate in this risky armor effectiveness trial, and thus the Nilfgaardian officer concluded Yoana was a fraud. After this, she packed up her things and left Velen for good. I hope, in the end, she found some place where they could appreciate her talent.
