OUTRAGEOUS Lamine Yamal skill has fans on cloud nine as Barcelona edge Valencia in La Liga opener
FC Barcelona are up and running in La Liga. The Blaugrana got off to a winning start under new manager Hansi Flick as his side edged Valencia on Saturday night. The side captained by Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal and led by Robert Lewandowski in attack won their season opener by two goals to one.
Even though veteran striker Robert Lewandowski scored both goals in the game, Lamine Yamal took most of the headlines for an outrageous skill near the halfway line at the hour mark. The 17-year-old picked up the ball near the touchline and set the crowd on fire as he got away from a charging opposition player effortlessly with a roulette.
Fans were reminded of Zinedine Zidane himself as the teenager imitated his iconic skill and made the crowd dance to his tune. The skill move however, did not result in a goal, even though Yamal was not to blame for it.
The Spaniard’s inch-perfect through ball fell to Ferran Torres, who failed to beat opposition keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from close range.
Robert Lewandowski fires Barcelona past Valencia in season opener
Despite all the criticism aimed at Robert Lewandowski in the previous season, Hansi Flick‘s men had the polish striker to thank for his brace in the season opener. FC Barcelona found themselves trailing to Valencia minutes before half-time, as Hugo Duro placed his header beyond the reach of Ter Stegen. Barca considered themselves lucky not to go 2-0 down before half-time, as a wayward pass from Ter Stegen nearly ended up in their own net.
The German had Pau Cubarsi to thank for making a crucial goal line clearance. It didn’t take long for Barcelona to respond though, as Lewandowski got on the end of a Lamine Yamal cross to direct the ball toward the goal. Flick’s men quickly turned the game on its head, when the referee pointed to the spot for a foul committed on Raphinha.
Barcelona’s No.9 placed his penalty to the top right corner with conviction, giving the Georgian keeper no chance of getting his hands on it. With the win, Barcelona are now in second place, although arch-rivals and defending La Liga champions Real Madrid are yet to kick off their campaign.
