(Video) Gophers prematurely blast fireworks only to end up losing to North Carolina after missing th
The fireworks at Huntington Bank Stadium seemed to go off in the night sky quite early for the Minnesota Golden Gophers as they ended up with an embarrassing defeat at the hands of North Carolina. As it turns out, the 47-yard field goal that was supposed to clinch the victory, for which the celebrations were meant, resulted in a being missed.
As the Gophers players huddled away, college football fans were sitting on the edge of their seats nervous for the decisive play in front. In the end, it seemed the intense pressure got the better of the Minnesota’s kicker, who for the second time that night, missed a crucial field goal after kicking the ball narrowly to the left.
It was truly a heart-wrenching moment and before the fans could take in what happened, the speakers blasted Harry Styles‘ “As It Was” and the fireworks filled the night sky. The celebration was for the game-winning field goal but it seems the stadium crew missed it causing an embarrassing moment for the whole of Minnesota.
Meanwhile, North Carolina sure got the moment to reminisce about their victory as it was a huge one for them, especially after they lost two key players by the third quarter– Tar Heels and starting quarterback Max Johnson. But in their time of crisis, their backup quarterback showed up for the team leading to a close 17-19 victory.
Gophers’ Darius Taylor misses season opener against North Carolina
While North Carolina had their star players till the third quarterback, their opponent Golphers entered the Thursday Night game without their star running back, Darius Taylor. He sustained a serious hamstring injury during the training camp and had to miss seven games last season.
When he returned for the Quick Lane Bowl last season, he earned the MVP honor after rushing for 208 yards. However, earlier this month on August 13, his hamstring injury worsened and he was ruled out of the opening game of the season.
Taylor proved himself a key player for the Golphers in his freshman year when he finished with 138 carries for 799 yards and 5.8 yards per attempt along with five rushing touchdowns and 11 receptions for 92 yards. With the absence of Taylor, the running game of Minnesota was on the shoulders of Marcus Major, Jaren Mangham, and Sieh Bangura.
